    General Information About Laos

    Central Province of Laos

    Capital of the province: Vientiane

Located: on a curve of the Mekong River (Central Provinces)
    Total area: 3,920 square kilometers
    Population: 768,743
9 Districts: Chanthabouly, Sikhottabong, Xaysettha, Sisattanak, Naxaithong, Xaythany, Hadxaifong, Sangthong & Pak Ngum Located on a curve of the Mekong River, Vientiane Capital has a recorded history that stretches back to around 1,000 AD. The area was originally settled because of the fertility of the surrounding alluvial plains, and Vientiane became the capital city of Laos around the mid-16th century.

    Laos Food

When you get hungry try the nation’s signature dish, tam mak-hung (spicy green papaya salad).  laap (spicy minced meat salad) and ping kai (fried chicken). For its size, Vientiane Capital is surprisingly multicultural and has excellent French, Indian, Thai, Chinese and Vietnamese restaurants that serve both Lao and specialty dishes. Quench your thirst with a refreshing Beer Lao or fresh fruit shake from one of the many small restaurants found along almost every street in town. At dusk, find a spot along the Mekong promenade to enjoy an amazing view of the sunset over the river.

    Money and Costs

The official national currency in Laos is the Lao kip (K). Although only kip is legally negotiable in everyday transactions, in reality three currencies are used for commerce: kip, Thai baht (B) and US dollars (US$).
1 USD is roughly 8500 KIP. Tipping is not customary in Laos except in tourist-oriented restaurants, where 10% of the bill is appreciated, but only if a service charge hasn't already been added.

    Travel and Transport

There are four international airports in Laos, where you can get visa on arrival : Wattay International Airport in Vientiane Capital, Pakse International Airport in Champasack Province, Luang Prabang International Airport and Savannakhet.

Wattay in Vientiane has regular service from Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Siem Reap, Phnom Penh, Kunming, Guang Zhou, Singapore, Seoul and Kuala Lumpur.??Several international and domestic airlines operate scheduled flights from Vientiane airport: Lao Airlines, AirAsia, China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, Thai Airways and Vietnam Airlines.??A shuttle bus service operates between Vientiane Wattay airport and the Central Bus Station with stops at several hotels in the city center. One way fare is 15,000 kip.

    Visa and Passport

All visitors entering Laos must possess valid passports. Visas can obtained from Lao Embassies and Consulates abroad. In addition, visas can also be obtained on arrival at the international checkpoint.

Visas can be secured in advance of arrival at Lao Embassies. This can be done in several ways through a tour company recognized by the Lao PDR, from Lao Embassies or Consulate in countries.

For those wishing to extend their stay, it is possible to extend your visa at the Immigration Office in Vientiane, through travel agencies. It is also possible to obtain a Visa-on-Arrival at international checkpoints.

Validity starts from day of entry into Laos. Tourist/Business: 30 days (can be extended twice in Vientiane for 30 days). Visas must be used within three months of being issued.

Passport/Visa Note: Those requiring visas should obtain them in their home country before travelling to Laos. Visas are available on arrival at international checkpoints. On entering Laos visitors must ensure they receive an entry stamp in their passport as fines for not having one are high. All visitors' passports should be valid for at least six months.
